Nowrouz Persian New Year's Day

These days we are anticipating the Persian New Year's Day (March 21st--the first day of the Spring). We call it Nowrouz, meaning the New Day. It is a national feast, dating back to no less than 2500 years. It is not related to Islam, the prevailing religion here.

At every home people arrange on a table seven small dishes of nature's symbols, like fruits, wheat sprouts, and a bowl of water in which a gold fish swims. Together with A mirror and several painted eggs (similar to the Easter eggs) the arrangments form what is called Haft-Sin, which means Seven /S/'s, this because name of these seven dishes begins with / S/ in Persian. Appearance of Haft-Sin table at homes sets the mood for the New Year's Day--like what Christmas tree does in other parts of the world.
